Summary:

In the field of holistic medicine, we know that behavior change is necessary for healing. We as doctors and practitioners have the tools to create health and wellness, but unfortunately the issue of patient non-compliance often leads to reduced long-term success rates.

Most diet and supplement protocols focus on behavior modification. “Eat this, don’t eat that.” “Take this supplement everyday and have patience.” The problem with this way of coaching is that the human brain does not work this way. We are asking someone to do something that, with their current thought structure, not only doesn’t come naturally to them, but creates pain in order to do so. What starts out as strong willpower dwindles into pure apathy and hopelessness.

Does this scenario sound familiar:

Client : “I still don’t feel well and I’m not losing weight.”
Practitioner: “Have you been cutting out sugar and caffeine, meditating and taking your supplements?”
Client: “For the week after I saw you I did, but then the weekend came and ummm… I fell off the wagon.”

If we want to help our clients and patients create permanent change in their lives, we need to focus on shifting their brain neural pathways, not their behaviors. This can only be achieved through scrambling current associations to pain and pleasure. In this presentation I will discuss how the brain really works when it comes to changing habits. We will look at this main tool for shifting thoughts as well as a foolproof method for lowering clients’ stress levels in order to help them connect more fully with themselves and their healing path.
