  • The course will review the clinical considerations for patients presenting with both gastrointestinal dysfunction and nutrients deficiencies. Discussion around how to assess the patient through history, signs and symptoms will be included. The content will include how to follow up with lab testing, with emphasis given to stool assessment and micronutrient testing concurrently. There will also be information provided on how to review the two testing methodologies together to provide the patient with a more comprehensive protocol as opposed to reviewing either test independent of the other. Moreover, the practitioner will walk away having a better understanding of how to review stool testing to understand micronutrient implications and how to review micronutrient testing to gain insight about the health of the gastrointestinal tract. The content will provide the practitioner with a working knowledge of how to more thoroughly support the patient.

    Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how the dynamics of each segment of the gastrointestinal tract affect the way we think about our approach to nutrition support.

  • Comprehend how to correlate symptoms with lab assessments to define the location of gastrointestinal dysfunction.

  • Understand the appropriate length of time to apply a therapy.

  • Enhance your diagnostic abilities by combining micronutrient assessment and stool testing.

    Hourly Breakdown:

  • Hour 1: Overview/review of the physiology and biochemistry of the GI tract, including the physiological role of nutrients

  • Hour 2: Extra-intestinal implications of gastrointestinal dysfunction highlighting correlations in the literature to neurodegenerative states, metabolic syndrome and mood disorders

  • Hour 3: The endogenous production of nutrients, neurotransmitters and biologically active metabolites resulting from commensal bacterial action and the factors that influence them

  • Hour 4: Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, the most commonly associated nutrients deficiencies, and the necessity to address the overgrowth, causes and possibility for recurrence


Arland Hill’s Bio:

Dr. Arland Hill is the Clinical Director of Complete Care Wellness Center and the Wellness Coordinator of Specialty Healthcare and Wellness, multi-disciplinary clinics in Houston, TX. He is a doctor of chiropractic medicine and a Board Certified diplomat of the American Clinical Board of Nutrition. He has been practicing since 2003 with a clinical focus on the use of science-based natural therapies for the management of chronic diseases. Dr. Hill received his doctorate from Texas Chiropractic College and a graduate degree in public health from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He has been a regular at Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston where he instructs students on the merger of nutrition into mainstream medicine. Dr. Hill consults in the nutrition and laboratory industries, where he offers his expertise in the development of products and strategies to improve patient outcomes. He routinely lectures on topics that are core to functional medicine, emphasizing the importance of research-based interventions.
